Body & Soul

$3,300.00

400mm (d) x 400mm (w) x 410mm (h)
stained Tasmanian Oak, dried raffia grass, glass, wax, steel, cotton thread

‘to keep body and soul together’, says my father in law when offering a snack to the weary.

Body and Soul being linked through food is an old concept whereby the soul can’t live without the body, and the body can’t live without sustenance; by sustaining one you can keep both alive and together. The Body & Soul table references this folklore.

A solid, steadfast timber frame is skirted by a moving grass facade, addressing the duality of the body as a physical object and the soul as more ethereal and transient counterpart to that, one which is wholly reliant on the body for structure. Inset into the top surface is a smoky glass window, which allows a view both into and through the table, creating a perception of lightness that is contrasted with the seemingly solid outer form. The three hanging sections of hanging grass that make up the outer structure wobble in response to the slightest interactions, further disrupting this solidity by creating a constant sense of movement within the piece.

This design notably abstains from plastics, either new or recycled, and it can be readily disassembled into base components for repair or recycling.
